Starting Fresh

Would this qualify as a capsule collection? Not counting nail polishes but including brushes and tools my current collection totals 35 pieces. I feel like capsule collections are usually even smaller than this but I’m quite satisfied with how much I’ve eliminated from my makeup stash over the past two years. For a girl who started with 100+ blushes, 100+ lipsticks, and dozens of eye shadow palettes and highlighters, I think I’ve come a long way.

I’ve been gradually purging makeup since 2014 in an effort to streamline my makeup regimen. It had gotten to the point where I felt burdened by the sheer amount of makeup I owned. When I realized I could literally use a different blush or lipstick everyday for four months straight with no repeats I decided I needed to make a change. A kinder person (or an enabler) would’ve called me a makeup collector but the truth was I was a makeup hoarder. Even though I had so much makeup, I was really only using a handful of products regularly. I decided then and there that I had to edit my stash, keep only the items that I truly love and use, and get rid of everything else.

Letting go was, and is, a constant struggle especially when it comes to purging limited edition makeup but I’ve done it and I have no regrets. If you’re considering purging but feel hesitant, just know that the process gets easier the more you do it. It’s the first step that’s the most difficult.

CoverGirl So Lashy! BlastPRO Mascara

I received the new CoverGirl So Lashy! blast PRO mascara last month as part of an Influenster Voxbox to test for free and while I’m always thankful to be selected to join Influenster campaigns I wish they would consider letting participants choose between washable and waterproof mascara formulas. This isn’t the first mascara I’ve ever been asked to test a mascara and yet not once in all these years have I ever been sent a waterproof mascara. I have extremely watery eyes and personally I always buy waterproof mascaras because (1) they don’t give me raccoon eyes and (2) they hold a curl better. Regardless, I still enjoying testing new mascaras, waterproof or not, if only to try an innovative new wand but it’s something I can only test at home; I don’t feel confident in their ability to hold up against my teary eyes in public.

I’ve been testing the CoverGirl So Lashy! blast PRO mascara in the Extreme Black color everyday for the past month at home and these are my thoughts:

Influenster #FlawlessVoxBox Unboxing

My reasons for making this video were twofold. Firstly, I wanted to share with you all the products that I’d received from Inlfuenster to test and review this time around. The last time I was selected for a VoxBox was in February so it’s been awhile. Needless to say, I’m excited! Secondly, and most importantly, it was an excuse to test out the camera on my new smartphone. The image quality is all right — I shot it in HD — but it’s awfully shaky (sorry about that) and doesn’t compare to a dslr. My hands are pretty shaky by nature so I was hoping for a steady cam feature on the phone but, alas, I don’t believe there is one…unless it’s buried somewhere in the settings.

The items included in the Flawless VoxBox are:

  • Dr. Teal’s Eucalyptus Epsom Salt Soaking Solution
  • Simple Skincare Cleansing Facial Wipes (New Formula)
  • Simple Micellar Water Cleanser
  • Sinful Colors Kylie Jenner Trend Matters Pure Satin Mattes Professional Nail Color Collection – Miss Klaws
  • Harvest Snaps Snapea Crisps Lightly Salted
  • Yogi Tea (Honey Lavender Stress Relief & Soothing Rose Hibiscus Skin DeTox
  • CoverGirl So Lashy! by blastPRO Mascara (Extreme Black)

As usual, I’m the most excited about trying the snack in this particular voxbox. I’ve heard of Harvest Snaps before but I’ve never gotten around to trying them. Funnily enough, my nephew who’s a toddler was just visiting and he was actually eating a baby snack that looked a lot like these Harvest Snaps.

I’ve tried Simple’s Refreshing Facial Wash Gel (not sure if they still make this) and their Moisturizing Facial Wash before, both of which I liked, but never the Cleansing Facial Wipes or Micellar Water Cleanser so I have high hopes.

I’m a bit leery about the Dr. Teal’s Epsom Salt. As you know, my skin is ultra dry so whenever I see salt in a product’s name or list of ingredients it makes me cringe. I’m worried about the Epsom Salt drying my skin out but I’m always game to try something new.

I’ve owned Sinful Colors nail polishes in the past. They’re okay for a cheap thrill but they were never among my favorite drugstore nail polish formulas. However, it’s been a long, long time since I’ve used Sinful Colors so maybe the formula’s gotten better.

The Yogi Teas sound interesting. I’m hoping the floral flavors are on the subtler side and don’t end up tasting like perfume or potpourri in my mouth.

And I’m glad that there’s a makeup item to try. It’s been awhile since I’ve tried a new drugstore mascara. I’ve been pretty faithful to Maybelline Volum’ Express The Colossal Waterproof mascara over the years. The only thing I’m worried about is the CoverGirl So Lashy! mascara that I received is non-waterproof. My eyes get pretty watery so it may end up being a total mess on me.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

Too Faced’s Better Than Sex mascara isn’t the type of mascara I would ever buy. I’m a huge proponent of “no makeup” makeup and when I select mascaras I prefer ones that give my eyelashes natural looking definition and separation. Length and volume don’t really matter much to me but if I have to choose between the two I would go for a lengthening mascara. Most importantly because I have very watery eyes I always, always go for a waterproof formula.

Better Than Sex is the total opposite of what I look for in a mascara. It promises dramatic volume and length with its non-waterproof formula. And yet I’ve always wanted to try it because of the polarizing reviews. People seem to either really love this mascara or really hate it.

I probably would’ve never tried this mascara on my own but I recently received it as a gift so of course I had to test it just to see what all the hype’s about. I wouldn’t pay for it but for free, why not?

Tarte Beauty in the Basics Unboxing

Tarte Beauty in the Basics

About a week ago in my Tarte Showstopper palette review I swore I would never buy another Tarte eye shadow again but less than one week later I ended up ordering the QVC TSV Tarte Beauty in the Basics kit. So much fail! (Referring to myself, not the kit.)
