Urban Decay Sheer Revolution Lipstick – Sheer Liar

If you can still get your hands on them, now’s the time to stock up on some seriously cheap Urban Decay Revolution lipsticks. Apparently, all of the old Revolution lipsticks, including the Sheer Revolution lipsticks, are/were on clearance everywhere to make room for the newly repackaged (and reformulated?) Vice lipsticks.

The Urban Decay Revolution and Sheer Revolution lipsticks normally retail for $22 each but I managed to find the one shade I’d been meaning to try, Sheer Liar, on clearance at macys.com for $11.

I wish I’d tried the Sheer Revolution lipsticks sooner because if they’re all like Sheer Liar then they’re great! It’s exactly what I love and look for in lipsticks. It’s creamy, smooth, has a nice thickness to it that helps smooth out lip lines, is nicely pigmented but still has some translucency to it, and has a glossy finish. If you’re a fan of Revlon Lip Butters and Almay Butter Kiss Lipsticks which all have that balm-like consistency, semi-sheer pigmentation and glossy shine, I think you’ll really enjoy the Sheer Revolution formula.

Sheer Liar is completely unscented which in my opinion gives it a slight edge over the lemon scented Too Faced La Creme lipsticks that I love (not a big fan of fragrance in my makeup). The texture is thicker and stiffer on contact initially compared to the Revlon Lip Butters, Almay Butter Kiss Lipsticks and Too Faced La Creme lipsticks but give it a couple of seconds to warm up on the lips and it loosens up and starts feeling buttery and creamy like a comfortably thick lip balm. It’s not as moisturizing as the aforementioned lip products but it has that nice balmy feel that I like.

Bare lips

When doing lip swatches, I think it’s important to show the “Before” as well as the “After” because the natural pigmentation of one’s lips can really affect how a lipstick looks on the lips, especially if it’s a sheer lipstick. Some people with really pigmented lips like to put a bit of foundation or concealer on their lips before applying lipstick so that the true color of the lipstick shows up. Me, my lips are naturally very pale so they’re pretty much a blank canvas already.

Urban Decay Sheer Liar is described as a “sheer pinky-brown nude.” On me, I don’t see a whole lot of brown. To me it’s an ultra wearable, great for any occasion, neutral pink. The Revlon Lip Butter in Pink Truffle, for example, is way browner.

I swatched several of the lipsticks in my stash and the closest matches to Urban Decay Sheer Liar that I could find were the Almay Butter Kiss Lipsticks in the shades Berry Light-Medium and Berry Medium. Because all three lipsticks are semi-sheer (or semi-opaque, depending on how you look at it), they end up looking nearly identical on the lips. In my experience, it’s much harder to dupe very opaque lipsticks; sheer lipsticks are much more forgiving.

The main differences are Sheer Liar is a tiny bit warmer, Almay Berry Light-Medium contains some fine pink microshimmer, and Almay Berry Medium is a smidgen more purple but if no one’s looking too closely I think most people would be fooled. If you’re okay with a lipstick that looks “close enough” and feels good on the lips, you could hardly go wrong with the Almay Butter Kiss lipsticks. They provide a similar effect and are relatively inexpensive ($5-$8 depending on where you buy them). They’re a little sheerer than Sheer Liar so you may have to give them a couple of extra swipes on the lips but considering how cheap they are I don’t mind.

  1. I wanted to get Liar in the regular formula but I wasn’t fast enough to snag one! I might have to try the Almay Berry Light-Medium if I want the sheer formula – great to have a drugstore dupe!
