CVS Semi-Annual Clearance Haul Feat. Sally Hansen Colorfast Tint + Moisture Balms

CVS Semi-Annual Clearance Haul

CVS’s semi-annual clearance sale is currently going on and although there are quite a number of items that have been marked down, there aren’t very many things I’m interested in buying. I browsed the entire store’s selection and I only ended up buying the Wet n Wild trio in Knock on Wood and a few of the Sally Hansen Colorfast Tint + Moisture Balms. I didn’t expect much from the balm sticks but, let me tell you, I love them!

The Sally Hansen Colorfast balms are supposed to be available in 10 shades but there were slim pickings at the CVS store I visited. I only managed to find three left in the display that were unopened — Spirited Spice, Health Nut, and Pumped Up Plum — and I bought them all. The original retail price on these is $5.29 each but they’re currently 75% off making them $1.32 apiece. I couldn’t resist!

The Colorfast balms feel nice and smooth on the lips and are moderately hydrating but I wouldn’t call them super moisturizing. The Jordana Twist & Shine Moisturizing Balm Stains, Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Sticks and Clinique Chubby Sticks all feel feel creamier and have more slip. The Sally Hansen feel a smidge drier in comparison but they have a glossier finish.

The Sally Hansen Colorfast Balms have a vanilla scent which I prefer over the peachy/mango scent of the Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Sticks and the fruity raspberry scented Jordana Twist & Shines. The best of all, in my opinion, are still the Clinique Chubby Sticks which are fragrance-free.

No need to sharpen the Colorfast Tints. These are twist-up balm sticks. I love that.

The pigmentation is sheer but somewhat buildable. You won’t be able to achieve the intensity of the Clinique Chubby Stick Intense with these.

Unlike Revlon and Jordana who advertise their chubby balm sticks as lip stains, Sally Hansen only claims that the Colorfast Tint + Moisture Balm is a “nourishing lip balm with a hint of tint and boost of moisturizing shine,” so don’t buy one thinking it’ll be a long wearing lip product with opaque color. These are lightweight tinted balms with a glossy finish. They’ll only last on the lips for a couple of hours, less if you eat or drink.

I remember when these were first released and people wondered if the Colorfast shade in Blackberry Honey would be a dupe for Clinique’s Black Honey. Word came back quickly that it wasn’t. However(!!!), I think that the Colorfast shade in Pumped Up Plum may be a contender. Contrary to its name, it’s not a plum but more of a raisin-y reddish brown that’s quite similar to Black Honey. I swatched both side by side and Clinique’s is just slightly more purple but I think they’re extremely close.

I should mention, however, that it took 20-30 swipes of Clinique Black Honey to achieve the level of pigmentation you see in the swatches — it’s super duper sheer — compared to 3-5 swipes of the Sally Hansen chubby stick.

My Clinique Black Honey/Palladio Brownie dupe post remains one of my most read blog entries but I think that Sally Hansen Pumped Up Plum may be an even better dupe. In my opinion its undertones and finish are more similar to Black Honey than Palladio Brownie, so snatch one up at CVS before they’re all gone! Remember it’s only $1.32.

I regret not buying the Sally Hansen Colorfast Tint + Moisture Balms sooner. I could’ve hyped them up on my blog and helped spread the word about them. Now it’s too late. They’re on clearance which means they’re probably being discontinued 😦

CVS Semi-Annual Clearance Haul

I enjoyed the three Colorfast sticks I got so much I went to a second CVS a few days later and bought all of the remaining ones they had at that store. I came back home with Reddy For Anything, another Health Nut, another Pumped Up Plum, and Blackberry Honey.

I swatched all of the Sally Hansen balm sticks I own together with Clinique Black Honey below. You can see how different Blackberry Honey is compared to Clinique Black Honey. It’s nowhere close to being a dupe. Pumped Up Plum, however, is very close. Again, it took over 20 swipes of Clinique Black Honey to achieve the level of color you see in the swatches and only 3-5 swipes of the Sally Hansen balm sticks.

Health Nut is very similar to Pumped Up Plum but is more straight up brown whereas Pumped Up Plum has that bit of red to it that makes it similar to Clinique Black Honey.

Reddy For Anything and Spirited Spice are also kind of similar but the latter isn’t as bright and leans slightly peachy/terracotta compared to Reddy For Anything.
